Get To Know The 7 Aussie Acts Performing At Coachella This Year
With Coachella starting this week, meet the 7 acts that will be representing Australia at one of the biggest music festivals in the world. #AussiePride.
Talk about being WYLD and unique, no other electronic duo does it better than Empire of the Sun. These Sydneysiders are famous for their eccentric style, which includes elaborate stage sets and headdresses. Gaining hits from the start, their 2008 debut album, Walking on a Dream received double platinum in Australia. On top of that, Empire of the Sun won best album and best group at the 2009 ARIA Music Awards. I’m sure it’s safe to say that they won’t disappoint!

Formed in 2010, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard is a psychedelic rock band from Melbourne. The ensemble of 7 has since produced 9 full-length albums with recent tunes experimenting with a progressive rock and folk sound. With the band starting out as just a group of friends jamming together, they have come a long way by performing at Gizzfest, the Australian wide festival, for the past 2 years and we definitely can’t wait to see them live at Coachella.

From Western Australia, we have Pond, a psychedelic rock band formed in 2008. With similar sounds to one of Australia’s favourite bands, Tame Impala, the two acts are considered “brothers” as they work together from producing music to sharing members with each other. With Pond being named “Hottest New Band In The World’ by NME magazine in 2012, we’re ready to add them to our list of favourites bands.

Another familiar act on the Coachella stage, we have the Sydney electronic act, What So Not, by record producer, Emoh Instead. Over the years, Emoh has collaborated with well-known artists including co-writing a song with DJ Snake. His EP ‘Gemini’ has been download over 800,000 times and is also charted globally on the iTunes Electronic EP chart. With experience at other dance festivals like Ultra, we’re looking forward to seeing his solo act live and dancing the night away.

20 years on and the Melbourne born duo, The Avalanches, are still going strong. Led by Robbie Chater and Tony Di Blasi, they are described to be an electronic act with a hint of hip-hop elements. Their album Since I Left You is considered one of Australia’s best albums of 2000 and has received multiple awards. What makes us even more excited for their Coachella gig is that The Avalanches had won Best Live Act 2001 by MUZIK magazine and we’re positive they’ll be blowing the crowd away!

A personal favourite of mine, we have Sydney act, Jagwar Ma. Formed in 2011, the trio is described to have a psychedelic rock and alternative dance sound. From touring as support for Australian band, Tame Impala in 2015, they have since played at festivals like Reading & Leeds and Glastonbury and also sold out tours in UK, France, Australia and US. Definitely not an act to be missed!

We’re definitely excited for Sydney’s very own talented DJ, vocalist, songwriter and producer, Anna Lunoe. No stranger to the Coachella stage, this will be Anna’s second time performing her EDM dance and electronic act. Besides Coachella, Anna has rocked out at many other acclaimed electronic dance festivals like Ultra and TomorrowLand. What’s more impressive is that Anna became the first woman to mix for Ministry of Sound Australia and the 3 compilations she produced went Gold. Talk about girl power!
